On April 17, 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the new breast cancer drug Tukysa in combination with trastuzumab (Herceptin) and capecitabine (Xeloda) for the treatment of patients with locally advanced, unresectable, or metastatic HER2-positive breast cancer (including those with brain metastases). Patients should have experienced disease progression after treatment with at least one first-line HER2-positive therapy.

Tukysa is a prescription drug that can be used in combination with trastuzumab and capecitabine to treat adult patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer who have metastasized (e.g., to the brain) or are not candidates for mastectomy. Patients should have received one or more anti-HER2 breast cancer therapies.

Tukysa may cause serious side effects, including:

● Diarrhea; Diarrhea is a common adverse reaction to TUKYSA and can sometimes be severe. If you experience severe diarrhea, tell your doctor immediately, as severe diarrhea can lead to significant fluid loss (dehydration), low blood pressure, kidney problems, and even death.

●Liver disease; TUKYSA may cause serious liver disease. Your doctor will test your liver function as needed before and every 3 weeks during treatment. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms of liver disease during treatment:

■Itching

■Yellowing of the skin or eyes

■Dark brown urine

■Pain in the upper right abdomen

■Feeling very tired

■Decreased appetite

■Easily bleeding or bruising

The most common side effects of Tukysa:

●Diarrhea

●Redness, pain, swelling, or rashes/blisters on the palms or soles

●Mouth ulcers

●Decreased appetite

●Abdominal pain

●Nausea and vomiting

●Fatigue

●Elevated liver function test results

●Vomiting

●Headache

●Anemia

●Rash

●Tukysa may affect male and female fertility.

If you experience any of the above side effects, your doctor may change your treatment dosage or discontinue treatment. If you have any questions, please consult your doctor.
